Why is the General Practitioner Inquiring About My Ethnicity?

– Certain ethnic groups may exhibit a higher genetic predisposition to specific diseases.
– Early screening and detection of certain conditions are recommended; for instance, in the United Kingdom, individuals of African or Caribbean descent may be encouraged to commence prostate cancer screening at an earlier age.
– There is a higher prevalence of vitamin deficiencies observed in some ethnic groups.
– Dietary and lifestyle habits, which may be influenced by cultural backgrounds, can have implications for health risks.

Is it Mandatory to Disclose Ethnicity?

– No, individuals are not obligated to disclose their ethnicity if they feel uncomfortable doing so. However, providing this information may enable the General Practitioner to deliver more personalized care.
